Direct vs Indirect Sets: How to Count Your Workout
A set of bench press can involve your chest, shoulders and triceps. That does not make it three separate sets you performed. To read a workout clearly, keep the number of sets you do separate from the muscles and regions assigned to them.
What direct and indirect mean in this builder
Direct sets train a muscle in a main working role; indirect sets involve it as a contributor. An exercise may have multiple primary muscles. The classification is specific to the movement and is not inferred from the order of anatomical labels.
Three standard bench-press sets give chest three direct sets and triceps three indirect sets. Add three triceps pushdown sets: triceps now has three direct plus three indirect, or 4.5 estimated sets. You performed six actual sets.
Why the totals can look larger than your workout
A muscle receives at most one contribution from each exercise set. Three leg-extension sets count as three direct quadriceps sets, not three sets for each head added together.
Compare estimates over the same period. Do not add different muscles together: a compound exercise contributes to several muscles, but is still one exercise set.
A push-day example: where 15 sets land
Five exercises, three working sets each: 15 actual sets. Muscle estimates count direct sets fully and indirect sets halfway. Muscles overlap, so do not add these rows to get the workout total.
| Exercise | Sets |
|---|---|
| Barbell Bench Press | 3 |
| Dumbbell Seated Shoulder Press | 3 |
| Cable Lateral Raise | 3 |
| Cable Rope Pushdown | 3 |
| Dumbbell Chest Fly | 3 |
| Muscle | Direct | Indirect | Estimated sets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chest | 6 | 0 | 6 |
| Triceps | 3 | 6 | 6 |
| Shoulders | 6 | 6 | 9 |
An example for exploring the tool, not a complete training prescription. Rep ranges are editable; they do not change these counts.

IronByte uses direct + 0.5 × indirect and keeps the raw breakdown visible. Six direct plus six indirect sets gives nine estimated sets. This is an approximation, not an exact stimulus measurement.
Pelland and colleagues found stronger support for fractional counting than direct-only or equal counting. It remains a planning heuristic; the study does not validate every exercise classification or individual response.
From one workout to a training week
The whole-plan view counts each included workout once. If you repeat the same push workout twice in a week, include it twice to represent that week. Name the workouts so the repeated sessions are easy to identify; the builder does not schedule them for you.
Rep ranges are saved with each exercise but do not affect the map’s set counts. Effort, load and recovery also are not inputs to this counter. Use it to organize your plan and discuss it with a coach, rather than to calculate an ideal dose or predict results.
